Breaking out of the cookie cutter version of a Christian

Have you ever felt boxed in? Like the people around you only see a specific side of you? As Christians, we can sometimes feel that pressure too. There can be an expectation to follow a certain mold, a "cookie cutter" version of faith if you will. But what if God created you to be more than that?
In this post, and this newfound blog, I'm stepping out of the mold and inviting you to embrace your own unique walk with Christ.
For most of my life, I felt like I was playing a role. In academic circles, I was the overachieving "nerd." In certain college circles, I was a superficial party girl. And to some, I'm just a boujee stuck up prude. These are boxes that others have put me in, And honestly, I refuse to let my faith be squeezed into a box.
So What is a Cookie Cutter Christian?
The "cookie cutter" idea suggests there's only one way to follow Christ. It can turn faith into a performance rather than a relationship. Social media can fuel this feeling, with trends and challenges dictating what a Christian "should" be doing.
Suddenly, everyone's waking up at 5 am, fasting, and adhering to the latest Christian influencer's practices or daily morning routine. Don't get me wrong, these practices can be valuable, especially fasting. Fasting is SO important, and a beautiful thing to do. Everyone walking with Christ SHOULD fast, but do it when it’s on your heart to, not when it’s a trend to. You really have to check yourself constantly in your walk with Christ. Because it’s so easy to compare yourself, and comparing yourself in your walk with Christ will quite literally have you walking outside of your purpose. There was a time when I thought I HAD to wake up at 5am and have my quiet time with God, but what if I can commune better with God in the evening?
Let's Talk Scripture:
Jesus was healing on the day of Sabbath, a day of rest and no work, and the Pharisees were NOT having it! (this can be found in John 9, and throughout the other gospels as well). They were literally mad at Jesus because he was HEALING someone on the wrong day. Imagine having the gift to heal someone that has been suffering since they were born, and people are mad because you chose the wrong day to do the healing. If Jesus remained boxed in to what religion said, he could've missed the opportunity to heal and bring forth another witness to spread the good news that people need to hear. How could remaining boxed in disrupt JESUS’ purpose?
Can we take a moment to unpack that? Had he stayed boxed in, the world wouldn't have witnessed his healing power or heard this message of hope.
I want you to hold onto this, I have to hold onto this, because my walk is different. God is calling me to be different. And if I’m going to fulfill my purpose, if I’m going to walk into what God has for me, I can’t be a Cookie cutter Christian. I can't stay boxed in. I cant adhere to what culture thinks I should look like, be like, or act like.
I want to make sure I am not a performing the role of Christian and actually being a follower of Christ.
Performance vs. Authenticity
There's a difference between performing Christianity and being a Christian. Following Christ is about a genuine relationship with him, not putting on a show.
God has made us each for a very specific purpose. He knew the plans he has for us (Jeremiah 29) and I promise you it’s not the same as the next person. So, what God reveals to you, what God shows you may not always look like what everyone else is doing.
Breaking The Mold
In a world where podcasting and TikTok creation is the current obsession, God nudged me to start a blog. My initial thought? "Are blogs even relevant anymore?", “Are blogs even popular? the podcast I had was a really good idea, are you sure I shouldn't pick it back up? But then I had to check myself. Am I doing this to be relevant or am I doing this for God?
This blog is for me, and for anyone who stumbles across it. It's a space to break free from the cookie-cutter mold. Because while we all share an identity in Christ, we don’t share the same exact personality. What does that mean? That means I am working to live a life that is rooted in Christ, his word, and pleases God, but it may look different than someone else because my personality, my gifts, my passion, all the ways he’s made me different, will reflect in my walk. I have a multitude of different aspects about me, all beautifully conceptualized by God. I love writing, I have a passion for building friendships and connecting with people. Im a creative that loves the arts (music, paintings, theater etc.), exploring the world, trying new foods and restaurants and so much more. My personality doesn't take away from my walk with God, it enhances it. I call myself the Heiress Dess because I am an heir to the kingdom, and you can be to (Galatians 4:7), and I am an heir with a personality that God has made just for me.
I'm here to navigate life with Christ, and I hope you'll join me. Embrace your individuality, your passions, and the gifts God has given you. Let them shine through in your walk with Him. Welcome to the multitude.
